Viva Pensacola Jazz! 2013 — 30th Anniversary!

Planning is underway for the BIGGEST and MOST EXCITING JAZZ FESTIVAL in Pensacola history – to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Pensacola JazzFest!

This SIX-DAY event, scheduled for April 2 through 7, 2013, is being designed to put Pensacola on the INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL map! All over town, as well as on Pensacola Beach, the sounds of Jazz – Big Band, Contemporary, Dixieland, Traditional, New Orleans – along with Gospel, Blues and much more, will be presented in a wide variety of venues. With international and national marketing, “VIVA PENSACOLA JAZZ!” will draw thousands of out-of-town visitors from all over the country and the world.

What’s more, this great jazz festival is being coordinated with the Viva Florida 500 statewide celebration of 500 years of Florida history.  Here’s the link to the Viva Florida 500 website:  http://www.fla500.com

Here is an overview of what is being planned (subject to change):

Tuesday, April 2: DIXIELAND DAY on Pensacola Beach and all over Pensacola
Begin with a hot band playing Dixieland music, starting on the beach with a set at the pavilion and then taking the party from club to club. Pensacola would rock with great Jazz coming from the Fish House to Seville Quarter to Vinyl and many venues in town with great local musicians.

Wednesday, April 3: GOSPEL and BLUES DAY all over town with churches like Olive Baptist to Greater Union Baptist to St. Joseph Catholic etc. and places like Devilliers Cultural Heritage Museum producing their brand of Gospel and Christian Contemporary music with the restaurants in town featuring the “Blues”. There will be a Spring music Festival night at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church. The African-American Heritage Society will host an evening celebration. Belmont Cultural Society will do a Gospel evening with “Elements of Praise” Gospel group. Seville Quarter  and Five Sisters will feature Blues  that evening.  Other venues will be encouraged to feature Blues as well.

Thursday, April 4: BIG BAND DAY starting with a Military band – possibly “The Commodores” –  in the Naval Air Museum for those of us who like to party in the afternoon! An evening concert at Seville Quarter featuring an exciting performance by our own Civic Band or other big band.

Friday, April 5: JAZZ ON PALAFOX! UWF Phillips Piano Competition is at the Saenger with people pouring out afterwards with no place to go. How about a VIVA JAZZ street party with Jazz up and down Palafox St?! Tonight’s feature will be Latin Jazz,, with a SALSA contest at Seville Quarter. This would also be a tribute to VIVA Florida 500.

Saturday, April 6: JAZZFEST! Seville Square will be the site of our 30th Annual Pensacola JazzFest, featuring a big act like Arturo Sandoval along with numerous regional and local performers, college, high school and middle school jazz bands  – all day, and all free to the public!  The day would close with a Big Jazz Jam Session!

Sunday, April 7: JAZZFEST!… JazzFest 2013 will continue all day in  at Seville Square.  Sunday evening: a big Smooth Jazz concert, either at the Saenger or at Maritime Park.

Picture while all this is going on, a Jazz Cruise, leaving from various places…Flounders, Fish House etc. featuring local artists either for brunch, sunset or both!
