CD Review: ‘Christmas with Champian,’ Champian Fulton

Christmas With Champian
Champian Fulton, piano and vocals

This is the seventh recording for this lovely New York City based pianist/vocalist who is still in her twenties. She is supported by bassist David Williams, drummer Fukushi Tainaka and her father, flugelhornist Stephen Fulton. Her selection of standard Christmas songs is both pleasing and unique. One that is especially appealing to this reviewer is Vince Guaraldi’s Christmastime is Here. Stephen Fulton’s flugelhorn work enhances this pleasing number. Ms. Fulton’s voice is full and pleasing and enhances her pianistic skills.

Here’s a listing:
White Christmas (Berlin); Pretty Paper (Willie Nelson); I’ll be Home for Christmas; Winter Wonderland; Gracias a Dios (Bojalil); Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; The Christmas Waltz; Sleigh Ride; A Child is Born; Let It Snow; Merry, Merry Christmas (C. Fulton).

Ms. Fulton is touring the United Kingdom in November and performs in New York’s Blue Note on Nov. 19 with December appearances in Canada, Washington State, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Her website indicates early influence by Clark Terry. Of interest to Pensacola jazz fans, she was a participant at the Phillips Jazz competition here early in her career.
