Most Jazz Pensacola members are likely acquainted with Chip Shelton, New York dental specialist, jazz flautist and brother of our member, Ron Shelton. Chip has performed for Jazz Pensacola at various times. The last was about a year and a half ago when he performed for a Jazz Jam. Chip and Ron had just returned from a jazz cruise, on which Chip had been a featured performer.
Chip has made donation of his book Excel In Two Careers, in which he discusses how he juggles being a busy dental specialist while being a jazz performer on flute and saxophone. In a way, I had opportunity to watch this book develop. That is, he sent me a preliminary copy a year or so ago. I was intrigued by his exposition and also appreciated the fact that he included our own Jazz Pensacola members attorney-guitarist Jim Green and technical specialist-jazz pianist Gino Rosaria.
The first CD, Plan Be Dream Music, features Chip on multiple instruments including various flutes, saxophones, piccolo, vocals and percussion! Pensacola’s Gino Rosaria also plays piano on one number.
Chip’s second CD Mentors: Chip Shelton Peacetime Ensemble pays tribute to jazz greats which have inspired him, such as Frank Wess, Jimmy Heath and others.
So, if you are local, check out from Jazz Room at downtown West Florida Public Library. If not, then contact Chip at Crystal Clear Music Studios, Inc. 327 Beechmont Dr., New Rochelle, NY 10804-4601.
